The Ultra is not a Bluetooth hoverboard and it doesn't have any built in speakers to play music. There aren't any real special features on this board, it's just a good ol' no frills hoverboard.

Safety

The board and its components are fully UL2272 certified.

It also has a speed safety feature in the form of a warning beep whenever the top speed is approached. This is a good safety measure for kids, however it can be annoying for experienced riders who want to rude at the max speed.

Conclusion

The reason it makes the list as one of the best hoverboard you can buy is because this balance scooter is easy to ride, is suitable for both kids and adult riders, and has an impressive range for such a low-priced hoverboard.

The Hover-1 Ultra is popular with college students and commuters due to the long range of the battery, light weight of the board, and low price compared to other hoverboard models.

It’s not the fastest hoverboard on the our list, but it is still a great overall self-balancing scooter nevertheless.

As well as being used as a personal transportation device, this hoverboard is also great for fun and recreation and can be used and enjoyed by both beginners and more experienced riders alike.

The Scooterologist Guide To Buying A Hoverboard

You should now have a better idea of some of the top hoverboard brands on the market, and what are the best hoverboards to buy for your specific needs.

Reading hoverboard reviews is a great way to gauge what model and type of self balancing scooter is right for you.

But once you know which are the best hoverboards to buy there are some other considerations you should keep in mind to help you finalize your decision.

Regardless of whether you are looking to buy an off-road hoverboard to explore new terrain, or an everyday hoverboard for transport purposes, there are some things you need to pay attention to when you are considering buying a hoverboard.

Here’s some of the key things you should look for when buying a hoverboard:

The Hoverboard’s Top Speed

One of the most important specifications you should look at when you are deciding what is the best hoverboard for you to buy is the top speed that the board can reach.

Speed is normally one of the first things that hoverboard buyers look for when they are purchasing an electric self-balance board.

Many people buy a hoverboard because they want to experience the thrill of riding a fast hoverboard. They want to feel the excitement that comes from travelling on these two-wheel scooters at rapid speeds.

Most of the hoverboards on the market come with a top speed of anywhere between 6 mph and 10 mph.

If you are looking for the best hoverboards for adults than you should look for one with a top speed anywhere between 7 mph and 10 mph.

The average hoverboard has a top speed of 7 mph, whereas the more advanced and expensive hoverboard models have top speeds of up to and above 10mph.

Boards that can reach 10 mph or more are considered to be for experienced hoverboard riders.

You may think 10 mph is not that fast, but when you’re riding a hoverboard at that speed it can feel extremely fast…..and fun!

If you take into consideration that the average walking speed of an individual is between 3-4 mph, average jogging speed is 4-6 mph, and average running speed is between 6-8 mph, you can appreciate how fast going 10mph on a hoverboard will feel!

If you’re looking to buy a hoverboard for a young child aged 6 or 7 years plus, then buying a board with a top speed limit between 6-8 mph would be a good option.

However, there are a number of boards that come with a level adjustment option or beginner mode feature, which lets you set the maximum speed the board can reach.

These are perfect hoverboards for both adults and kids alike as you can simply adjust the max speed depending on who is riding the scooter.

As you get more comfortable and experienced with riding your board you can simply adjust the level to unlock the next max speed limit.

Boards with this mode adjustment feature are a great option for hoverboard beginners - both kids and adults, and help you to learn how to ride a hoverboard at your own pace.

The ability to adjust the hoverboard's speed also means the same board can be used by yourself as well as your children or younger siblings without you having to buy separate boards for each person.

Deciding what board and top speed is right for you will depend heavily on the reasons you have for buying a hoverboard.

You may want to use your balance scooter as a greener alternative to travelling in motor vehicles or on public transport, in which case you may be using your hoverboard to commute to work or college on a daily basis.

If you are planning to use it as a personal transportation device to get you from A to B than I would recommend choosing a board with a mid- to high top speed to get you around faster.

If you’re a bit of an adrenaline junkie you may be buying a hoverboard because you have a need for speed and want to race your board against friends and do fun things like time trials or circuits etc.

In this case you should go for a high-speed board that can reach 10 mph or more to get the maximum kick out of it.

You may want to use your smart electric scooter purely for occasional fun or recreational purposes like using it in your local park or back yard.

A board with a medium top speed like 6 or 7 mph would probably suffice for this casual use purpose.

Whatever your reason for purchasing a self-balancing scooter, you should choose one with a top speed that you feel comfortable riding at, and always remember that safety comes first.

If you are planning to ride on rough uneven surfaces such as off-road terrain and grass than make sure you ride at an appropriate speed for that terrain, and wear safety gear such as a helmet and elbow/knee pads.

Battery: Range and Charging Time

Electric hoverboards are powered by rechargeable batteries, with most two-wheel scooters on the market using a lithium-ion battery.

There are certain hoverboard brands that produce balance boards with different battery packs, such as LifeP04 batteries or lead-acid batteries.

However, lithium-ion remains the most common hoverboard battery pack used in the industry because they strike a good balance between cost and performance.

The hoverboard battery powers the hoverboard’s motors, mother-board circuitry, and other balance board features such as LED lights and built-in Bluetooth hoverboard speakers.

Most boards come with batteries anywhere between 24V and 36V.

The key things to look at when assessing a hoverboard battery are:

  • the charging time (how long it takes to fully charge the battery).
  • the range (how many miles you can travel on a full battery before having to recharge).

A reasonable charging time is between 1.5 – 5 hours.

A good battery should give you a range between 6 – 9 miles on a single charge.

Some of the best hoverboard brands produce models with ranges of 10 miles plus, which is perfect if you want to ride your hoverboard for longer distances without running out of juice.

Other features such as speakers and LEDs may use up more of your battery power and reduce your range, so bear this in mind if you’re planning on buying a hoverboard with Bluetooth and lights.

You should also make sure that the hoverboard battery is UL2271 certified to ensure it is safe, won’t leak, catch fire, or explode.

We’ll touch more on hoverboard safety certification later.

Hoverboard Motor Power

A hoverboard normally has two motors which are located on both sides of the balance board and are housed in the wheels themselves.

The power of the motor will determine how smoothly the hoverboard travels over surfaces, the degree of incline the board can climb, and the balance scooter’s ability to reach top speeds, even when being used by heavier riders.

The more powerful the motor = the better overall performance.

250W motors are pretty standard on most mid-range and cheaper hoverboards.

The more expensive top of the range hoverboards will normally pack motors 330W or more. The best hoverboards for heavier riders are ones that come with motor 330W or higher.

These are more suitable as they can reach top speeds and retain their incline abilities even when being used by a heavier rider.

Incline Handling

The degree of incline a board can climb is another aspect to pay attention to.

If you’re planning on riding your hoverboard over all sorts of off-road terrain, uneven surfaces, or in hilly areas - than you need a board which can comfortably climb steeper inclines. Boards with more powerful motors can climb steeper inclines more easily, even when being used by adults or heavier riders.

Most mid-range self balancing scooters will have an average incline ability of between 5 - 15 degrees. The best off-road hoverboards and heavy-duty balance scooters will be able to handle steeper inclines between 20-30 degrees or more.

The incline ability of an electric hoverboard is primarily determined by the motor in the board, but during use it will also be affected by the amount of battery power or charge left, and the weight of the rider.

Hoverboard Weight Limit

Personal transportation devices like hoverboards and electric scooters have a maximum weight capacity that they can handle.

When you are purchasing a hoverboard you should look at the maximum user weight the board has been designed for. Don’t try and ignore the hoverboard manufacturer’s weight limits!

These boards have been tested to ensure they are safe and can perform to their best ability at the max weight they have been designed for.

If you weigh more than the board can handle do not ride it! This can lead to you injuring yourself, and can also cause damage to the hoverboard.

The average hoverboard can handle a max weight capacity of 220 lbs which is suitable for kids and most adults. If you weigh more than 220lbs than you’ll need to get a suitable hoverboard for heavy adults.

Look for one with a higher weight capacity and stronger build quality.

Off-road hoverboards normally have a higher weight capacity than regular hoverboards, so perhaps you should consider buying an all-terrain hoverboard if you are a heavier rider.

Always check the boards max weight capacity before you buy.

The best hoverboards for heavy adults are ones that can reach top speeds and climb reasonably steep inclines, even when being used by heavier riders.

Hoverboard Wheel Size and Type

Different hoverboard models will have different wheel sizes.

The wheel size of a hoverboard is directly correlated to the board’s max weight capacity, stability, ease of use, and the surfaces it has been designed for.

Kids hoverboards and most mid-range hoverboards for adults will come with 6.5 inch wheels. These smaller wheel hoverboards are perfect for use on smoother surfaces such as roads, tarmac, sidewalks, and back yard surfaces.

They can even be used indoors without damaging or scratching surfaces.

The more expensive hoverboard models and boards that have been designed for heavy users and off-road terrain will typically come with bigger wheels, anywhere from 8.5” up to 10.5”.

If you are planning to use your balance board off-road, or are buying for a heavier user than you should consider buying a hoverboard with bigger, rugged all-terrain wheels which can handle uneven surfaces and heavier rider weight.

The Hoverboard’s Weight

You should also consider the hoverboards weight when considering which hoverboard is the best for you.

How much do hoverboards weigh? On average hoverboards weigh 25lbs (11.33kg). Some basic entry-level models can weigh as little as 20lbs, with the more heavy-duty off-road models weighing up to 32lbs or more.

If you plan on carrying your board around a lot or perhaps even travelling with your hoverboard than you ideally want a device that doesn’t weigh a ton.

You can purchase hoverboard accessories such as bags and cases which make them easier to carry.

Some boards have been designed with this in mind and even have carry straps that attach directly to the board itself for convenience.

Level Adjustment / Beginner Mode

If you are a hoverboard beginner and want to learn how to ride one of these self balancing scooters, you should consider buying a hoverboard with a level adjustment feature.

Being able to adjust the level of the board enables you to limit the top speed the scooter can reach. So if a kid is using the hoverboard you can limit the top speed of the board and not have to worry about them going too fast and potentially injuring themselves.

If you’re a novice adult hoverboard user you can start learning on a low level. When you become a more experienced rider you can set it to advanced level and unlock the scooters max speed.

Some boards also have a self-leveling feature which keeps the board level to the ground at all times - making riding, mounting, and dismounting the board easier.

Hoverboards with these beginner or learner mode options will enable you to shortcut the learning process significantly.

Other Hoverboard Features

There are also some other cool hoverboard features you may want to consider when you buy a self-balancing scooter.

 - LED Lights

Most boards come with front LED headlights to enable you to see more clearly in front of you, and also to make you more visible to other riders and pedestrians.

Having LED lights on your hoverboard will enable you to ride in low light conditions - perfect if you are using your hoverboard to commute or travel at night or during the winter and fall seasons when it gets dark earlier.

If you are planning to ride your hoverboard during the night than make sure you buy a hoverboard with good LED lights.

Some hoverboard brands produce boards with LED lights on the wheels which look pretty cool, especially in darker light conditions.

These lights are also a nice touch for kids who will enjoy using the hoverboard more.

 - Bluetooth

Another cool feature you may want to consider is Bluetooth functionality.

Bluetooth hoverboards enable you to connect your scooter with your smartphone so you can adjust the board's mode, monitor battery levels, and keep track of stats such as top speed and distance travelled etc.

Bluetooth hoverboards normally have speakers so you can play music via your smart phone whilst your hover around. You can adjust your music selection and volume via your smart phone when you pair it to the board via Bluetooth.

Most hoverboards with Bluetooth will have an app that you can download for free which lets you control these functions, and some even let you customize your LED light sequences to create awesome looking visual effects when you ride.

Using a hoverboard’s Bluetooth speakers and lights will use up more battery juice, so bear this in mind when you want to reserve your battery power.

Hoverboard Safety Certification

Whenever you are purchasing a hoverboard it is vital that you only buy hoverboards that are UL 2272 certified. The UL2272 certification is the gold-standard in hoverboard safety.

When these electrical personal transportation devices first hit the market there were numerous instances of hoverboards exploding, catching fire, and causing serious injury to their users as a result.

There were no industry-standard tests being carried out, which meant cheap boards with inferior components were being sold to consumers.

The cheap, unsafe, and untested components such as batteries, circuitry, and motors contained in these hoverboards were a recipe for disaster and a huge fire risk waiting to happen.

Inferior hoverboard batteries would leak, causing hoverboards to randomly explode and catch fire, sometimes even leading to houses being set ablaze.

Thankfully the industry has had a huge shakeup, and rigorous testing and safety standards have been brought in to ensure hoverboards are safe to use.

The Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is an international science safety company dedicated to product testing standards and quality.

They devised the UL2272 certification test as a means of making sure hoverboards are thoroughly tested and deemed safe before being sold on the market.

The UL2272 tests involve testing hoverboards and their components such as the motors, batteries, electric circuitry, lights, speakers etc.

The components and board itself are subjected to numerous tests which measure their ability to perform under certain circumstances and conditions such as overheating, overcharging, prolonged use etc.

You should only purchase hoverboards which are UL-2272 certified, which you can check by looking for the special UL holographic sticker on the products packaging, or by referring to the manufacturer’s website.

All the best hoverboard brands are UL2272 certified.

Overall Build Quality

Following on from what we’ve mentioned above about UL2272 certification, you should also have a good look at the overall build quality of a hoverboard before you purchase it.

You may find some cheap hoverboards which seem like a bargain, but then later find that they are of an inferior build quality. Low-quality hoverboards that are constructed from flimsy, low-cost materials and components won’t last long.

These inexpensive and cheaply made electrical devices may seem like good value for money, but you won’t get much long-term use out of them, especially if you plan on using your hoverboard a lot.

Instead, you should opt for a high-quality hoverboard with solid build, which will be able to last longer and survive heavy use, knocks, and bumps.

Good quality hoverboards are built to last, and are able to withstand the impact that comes from using them regularly.

A strong hoverboard should be able to comfortably support a rider up to the boards max weight capacity without losing any of its performance ability.

If it comes with LED’s lights make sure you test them to see if they actually work, and that they are useful in helping you to see in low light conditions.

Check the quality of the wheels, and the strength of the hoverboard housing. It should be sufficiently strong and resistant to cracks, knocks, and scratches.

Also check the general construction of the board and look for any lose components or screws etc. before you ride it.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Here are some frequently asked questions people have when they are thinking about purchasing a hoverboard:

What Is The Longest Lasting Hoverboard?

After conducting our hoverboard reviews we have narrowed this down to two heavy-duty hoverboards – the Halo Rover X and the EpikGo.

Both are high-quality hoverboards that have been built to last and can handle the knocks, bumps, and scrapes that a hoverboard is subjected to.

As long as you use these hoverboards responsibly and how they are supposed to be used, they will last a long time and deliver excellent value for money.

They both come with excellent warranty periods of one year, which is great when you compare it to the shorter warranty period offered by other hoverboard brands.

What Are The Safest Hoverboards?

The safest hoverboards are those that have been UL2272 certified. As long as the hoverboard is UL certified to UL-2272 safety standards it is safe to buy and use. If it is not UL2272 certified it is definitely not safe enough to use and may pose a significant fire risk. Uncertified hoverboards should be avoided at all costs!

These uncertified hoverboards can potentially explode, catch fire, and cause injury as they may have been made with unsafe components such as inferior batteries, motors and motherboards.

To ensure a hoverboard is safe make sure it contains the UL2272 hologram sticker on the product’s packaging. You can also check the website of the hoverboard manufacturer to see if their products are UL certified. If you are still in doubt you can check directly on the UL database to give you total peace of mind.

Certain hoverboard brands take their safety measures even further by housing their batteries in special units which add further protection.

Swagtron boards use their patented SentryShield battery technology to make sure the batteries are housed safely and securely.

Other hoverboard brands also have their own methods for ensuring their boards are safe as possible to use.

Do Hoverboards Catch Fire?

When two wheel hoverboards first hit the market they were normally very cheaply made and were not subjected to any industry standard tests.

Because of this a number of these cheaply made poor quality hoverboards, mostly made in China flooded the market. These low-quality boards tended to easily explode and caused fires that injured users and also lead to buildings being burnt down.

These problems led to the industry getting the shakeup it needed.

UL designed the 2272 safety certification test, which subjects a hoverboard and its various components to rigorous testing. These tests have been designed to put an electric hoverboard and its components through their paces to ensure they are safe for the market.

Only hoverboards that can pass these stringent tests will be given UL’s 2272 certification, which last between 3-5 years. When a hoverboard manufacturer has been awarded UL Certification they are continuously monitored for the duration of the certificate to make sure safety standards are maintained.

This includes inspections of the hoverboard manufacturer’s premises and subsequent hoverboard models and products.

These tests and further safety inspections ensure that boards with the UL2272 certification mean that hoverboards are safe and no longer catch fire or explode when used correctly.

Can You Ride A Hoverboard On Grass?

Off-road hoverboards with bigger rugged wheels can certainly handle grass very easily. But there are many non off-road hoverboards with smaller wheels that can also be used on shorter, less thicker grass.

As a rule of thumb, if its not a specially designed off-road hoverboard than don’t ride it on grass or dirt.

How Do Hoverboards Work?

Here's a very simplistic explanation of how self-balancing scooters work

Hoverboards have two wheels located on each side of the board. Each wheel contains an electric motor, speed sensors, and tilt sensor.

These sensors are able to detect the RPM (revolutions per minute) of each wheel, which is basically how many times the wheel turns per minute.

In the center of the balance board located underneath the foot pads are the hoverboard’s gyroscopes and pressure sensors. When you lean forward the pressure sensors detect this movement and send information to the board’s gyroscope which relays this to the mother board.

The mother board than instructs the motors to increase the RPM’s in an effort to re-align the gyroscope’s centre of gravity, therefore making the wheels spin faster, increasing the hoverboards speed.

How Much Do Hoverboards Weigh?

How much a hoverboard weighs will largely depend on the type of board it is and who it has been designed for.

Off-road hoverboards have bigger tires and are normally built a bit more rugged and bulky compared to everyday use hoverboards.

On average hoverboards can weigh anywhere between 20lbs and 32lbs, or more.

Hoverboards designed solely for kids will normally weigh less compared to hoverboards for adults.

You have to consider the material the board is made out of - it is aluminum, or is it made out of ABS plastic or another material?

Then you have to think about the weight of the wheels.

All-terrain balance boards will typically have 8.5 inch wheels or bigger, with rugged tires to handle the off-road environment.

These bigger wheels will weigh more than the typical 6.5 inch hoverboard wheels.

Other components that may add to a hoverboard's weight include the battery and motor, and other design elements such as protective wings.

Concluding Thoughts

Finding the best hoverboard for you is easier when you know what to look for.

Follow our hoverboard buying guide and you'll know exactly what attributes, qualities and features you should pay attention to when you're deciding which hoverboard to buy.

Ultimately, the type of self-balancing scooter you decide to order will depend a lot on what purpose you will be using it for.

Are you buying a hoverboard for commuting and personal transportation purposes? Or are you looking to use your hoverboard for fun and recreation?

Will you be using your hoverboard off-road on rough uneven surfaces, or do you plan on sticking to pavements, roads, and smoother surfaces?

The answer to these sorts of questions will help you decide which hoverboard features and specifications you should be prioritizing over others.

If you're planning to use your scooter off-road than opt for a model with all-terrain rugged wheels.

If you want to use your hoverboard to get to work or college, you should consider a board with a longer range and shorter charging times.

Perhaps you're thinking of buying a hoverboard for kids or the little people in your life. In this case I recommend you buy a hoverboard that has adjustable mode settings so that you can limit how fast the board can travel.

Of course there are specific hoverboards for kids which have been designed solely to be used by children, so you may want to consider going for one of these kids models.

Also consider the weight capacity of the board and make sure that it can handle your weight and the weight of other potential users you may be sharing the board with.

If you are buying a hoverboard online and aren't able to check the quality of the device firsthand, you should do some research on the hoverboard brand and particularly model.

There are loads of hoverboard reviews online so be sure to read them to see what other customers think of a particular board before you buy it.

Check the warranty period, and if possible take out extra cover if you feel necessary.

Regardless of which hoverboard you buy always remain to use your hoverboard responsibly and safely.

Pay attention to other road or pavement users, and try to be careful when riding in shared spaces like parks where there are children and dogs running around.

Hoverboards aren't allowed in certain areas, and are even illegal in certain countries, so make sure you check local laws before using your hoverboard.
