If you are buying the hoverboard for boys and girls aged 7 years and older than you can go for a board with a relatively decent top speed of around 7 – 9 mph.

If you are buying the hoverboard for children 6 years old and younger than you may want to consider a board with a lower top speed of around 6 - 7mph.

Kids will want to have as much fun as possible riding these self-balancing scooters and speed is a big part of what makes these personal transportation devices fun and exciting.

But for young kids and less experienced riders you may want a board that is slower than an adults hoverboard so that your child doesn’t go too fast and potentially injure themselves or others.

It all depends on how confident your children are at riding.

I’m guessing most kids would like a battery that charges fast so that they don’t have to wait around impatiently for hours before they can ride.

Some hoverboard batteries fully charge within 1.5 - 2 hours, whereas some can take up to 4.5 hours or longer.

3. UL2271 Certification

The third consideration is to make sure the battery is UL2271 certified. This is the approved UL safety standard for batteries used in electrical devices like hoverboards and electric scooters.

You should only buy hoverboards that have a UL2271 approved battery, or a hoverboard that is approved to UL2272 standards (which encompasses the UL2272 certitifcation).

When electric hoverboards first arrived on the market there were many cheaply made and inferior products being sold. Many of these boards had not been subjected to any sort of strict product testing or safety tests.

As a result, many of these inferior boards contained unsafe components such as cheap batteries which would leak, explode and even cause fires.

This was a serious issue and a cause for grave concern, especially among parents who had purchased a hoverboard for their kids.

Thankfully, Underwriters Laboratories, the worlds foremost organisation dedicated to product testing and safety standards created the UL2272 hoverboard safety certification.

These UL safety standard vigorously and thoroughly tests the hoverboards and all of their components such as the motor, batteries, wheels, frame, and circuit boards to ensure that they are safe and do not pose any risk of fire or electrical hazard.

Hoverboards that pass these tests are awarded the UL2272 safety certification.

When you are buying a hoverboard for kids you should always check that it is a UL2272 certified product. You can do this by checking for the UL hologram sticker on the products packaging.

If you are buying the hoverboard online and don’t have access to the packaging, check for the certification on the manufacturer’s website.

The minimum rider weight is the minimum weight needed to activate the board. If your child weighs less than this than the board will not be able to detect that they are on it, and it will not activate.
