These electric hoverboards for kids can provide hours of fun and enjoyment, and can help to pry the kids away from the TV and games console.

Kids aren’t spending enough time outdoors nowadays and that a real shame.

Kids can use them to roam about the neigbourhood, play in the backyard, or ride around their local park.

A very impressive pair of 10.5 inch tubeless vacuum tires enable kids to ride this balance scooter off-road on mud, sand, grass, dirt, gravel, and other rugged terrain.

Kids can ride this hoverboard over uneven, bumpy, and rocky, surfaces, and have hours of fun exploring off-road muddy paths, trails, and hiking paths.

These hoverboard tires have an anti-skid texture and coating which give them better grip and shock-absorption capabilities, making for a smoother ride even over rough surfaces.

This Segway balance scooter has an IP54 rating which means you can use it in wet weather conditions, and on wet or muddy off-road terrain.

Segway have equipped this hoverboard with their Smart Battery Management System. This system reports on the real-time status of the battery’s voltage, temperature, and current, and checks the battery’s status for potential faults.

Charging time is between 1 -1.5 hours and which will give riders a range of 13.7 miles.

One of the features that we believe makes the Ninebot S one of the best kids hoverboards on the market is the detachable knee control bar.

This knee control bar is a great innovation from Segway which makes it easier for children to learn how to ride a hoverboard. It also makes riding the self-balancing scooter more comfortable as it takes some strain off rider’s legs and ankles.

The knee bar makes balancing on the board easier and helps to make inexperienced and young riders feel more in control of the device.

Another great feature of this board is the ability to adjust its max speed and steering sensitivity. If you are worried about your child going too fast and not being able to handle the hoverboard you can simply limit the maximum speed and decrease the board’s steering sensitivity to make it easier for them to ride.

This feature makes the Ninebot S a great children’s hoverboard as it means they can learn at their own pace. Once they get more experienced and grow in confidence they can increase the steering sensitivity and unlock the boards max speed.

This is a really well-constructed balance board with a frame made from aircraft-grade magnesium alloy. This gives it strength and durability whilst also keeping the board light.

The Ninebot S only weighs 28 lbs so is lighter than many other hoverboards on the market. The knee bar also serves as a carry handle, making it even easier to carry around.

Despite its lightweight this hoverboard can handle a maximum weight capacity of up to 220 lbs.

Powerful front LED headlights help to illuminate paths and roads in front, whilst the directional indicators signal which way you’re turning. It also has a breaking light and rear tail light.

These impressive LED lights allow this hoverboard to be used in conditions of low light or poor visibility.

The Segway Ninebot S is a Bluetooth hoverboard, so you can pair it with your smartphone to unlock additional features.

There is a free downloadable Segway companion app which allows you to customize the lights so kids can change the colors to suit their preferences.

The app also allows kids to check on their rider stats such as top speed and mileage. You can also update firmware to keep the hoverboard up to date.

Another cool feature of the Segway app are the hoverboard tutorial videos which are great for helping kids (or adults) learn how to ride a hoverboard.

If kids start the “New rider tutorial” the Ninebot S will automatically limit the board’s max speed to 4.3 mph until riders complete the first tutorial, after which the maximum speed will be limited to 6.2 mph for the first 0.6 miles. After that the speed limiter can be disabled via the to unlock the Ninebot’s max speed of 10 mph.

This is a really useful feature from Segway and is great for helping kids to learn the basics and gain more confidence in hoverboard riding before you allow them to use the board at its full potential.

If your kids want a hoverboard that they can use off-road as well as on more conventional surfaces than the Segway Ninebot S is a great option.

The ability to increase or decrease the max speed and sensitivity of the device makes this a suitable hoverboard for 6 year old kids all the way up to teenagers.

This is a really cool hoverboard for girls and boys which the parents will also enjoy using – if the kids let them!

It is a quality device which has been built to last and which combines brilliant design, cool features, and great performance capabilities.

It’s not one of the fastest hoverboards on our list or even one of the fastest Hover-1 models, but speed is not always the main consideration when it comes to reviewing children’s hoverboards.

A nice safety feature built into this board is the beeping sound that is emitted when the top speed is reached, which is great for making young riders aware of their speed and prompting them to slow down.

This is a welcomed feature for a kid’s hoverboard as kids can sometimes lose track of how fast they’re going which can cause them to lose control of the board.

But for young kids and less experienced riders you may want a board that is slower than an adults hoverboard so that your child doesn’t go too fast and potentially injure themselves or others.

It all depends on how confident your children are at riding.

Some kids are natural daredevils and will take to fast hoverboards like a fish to water, whereas other kids are a bit more nervous and may take some more time before they are confident riding a board at top speed.

Remember that the top speed of a hoverboard doesnt mean that a child needs to ride the board at that speed.

They can ride slowly at a speed that is comfortable for them, and increase it as they gain more confidence and skill in riding the hoverboard.

Battery Life

The battery life of a hoverboard is an important aspect to pay attention to, and there are three main considerations to keep in mind when assessing a hoverboard battery.

1. Range

The first is the range of the battery. The range is basically how many miles a board can travel on a single charge before the battery needs recharging.

The lower the range = the faster the battery depletes.

The longer the range = the longer you can use the board before having to recharge.

If your child is planning on using the hoverboard for long periods of time than you should opt for a board with a bigger range so that they won’t have to constantly keep charging the battery after just a short amount of use.

This brings us to the 2nd important attribute of a hoverboard battery.

2. Charging Time

The second consideration to bear in mind when it comes to a hoverboard battery is the charging time.

I’m guessing most kids would like a battery that charges fast so that they don’t have to wait around impatiently for hours before they can ride.

Some hoverboard batteries fully charge within 1.5 - 2 hours, whereas some can take up to 4.5 hours or longer.

3. UL2271 Certification

The third consideration is to make sure the battery is UL2271 certified. This is the approved UL safety standard for batteries used in electrical devices like hoverboards and electric scooters.

You should only buy hoverboards that have a UL2271 approved battery, or a hoverboard that is approved to UL2272 standards (which encompasses the UL2272 certitifcation).

We will talk more about UL safety standards below.

UL Safety Certification

When electric hoverboards first arrived on the market there were many cheaply made and inferior products being sold. Many of these boards had not been subjected to any sort of strict product testing or safety tests.

As a result, many of these inferior boards contained unsafe components such as cheap batteries which would leak, explode and even cause fires.

This was a serious issue and a cause for grave concern, especially among parents who had purchased a hoverboard for their kids.

Thankfully, Underwriters Laboratories, the worlds foremost organisation dedicated to product testing and safety standards created the UL2272 hoverboard safety certification.

These UL safety standard vigorously and thoroughly tests the hoverboards and all of their components such as the motor, batteries, wheels, frame, and circuit boards to ensure that they are safe and do not pose any risk of fire or electrical hazard.

Hoverboards that pass these tests are awarded the UL2272 safety certification.

When you are buying a hoverboard for kids you should always check that it is a UL2272 certified product. You can do this by checking for the UL hologram sticker on the products packaging.

ul-certified sticker

If you are buying the hoverboard online and don’t have access to the packaging, check for the certification on the manufacturer’s website.

If you are still in doubt, then check the UL database to make sure the hoverboard manufacturer holds a valid UL2272 certificate.

The Hoverboard's Weight Capacity

Make sure you check the maximum and minimum wight capacity of a hoverboard before purchasing to make sure it is suitable for your child.

The minimum rider weight is the minimum weight needed to activate the board. If your child weighs less than this than the board will not be able to detect that they are on it, and it will not activate.

Luckily the minimum weight limit is always very low, so even a small child should be able to use most boards on the market.

The maximum weight capacity is the maximum rider weight limit that the board can handle.

If a rider weighs more than the max weight capacity of a board the board may not function properly and this could lead to the rider being injured, and the board getting damaged.

The Weight Of The Hoverboard

All hoverboard models are different, and some are heavier than others.

As your kids may need to occasionally carry their boards around with them you want to select a board that is light enough for them to carry, even if its just for short periods of time.

Off-road hoverboards typically weigh more than regular hoverboards as they have thicker wheels and are built more solidly to handle more rugged terrain and heavy-duty use.

Kids hoverboards can weigh anything from 14 lbs up to 28 lbs or more, so make sure you pick one that suits your child’s needs (and strength!).

This is also an important consideration for parents as you may sometimes allow your child to ride their hoverboard to school, which means you’re the one that has to carry it home!

Some hoverboard models have built-in carry straps which make them easier to carry, and there are also a variety of carry straps and bags available online that you can buy.

Hoverboard Wheel Size

Regular hoverboards will typically come with 6.5 inch wheels which are suitable for use on smooth surfaces such as sidewalks, playgrounds, backyards, and down the local park.

Most childrens’s hoverboards will have 6.5 inch wheels as standard, which should be sufficient for them to use on most surfaces.

If your child wants to use their hoverboard on more rugged terrain such as mud, dirt, gravel, or sand than it is recommended that you buy them an off-road hoverboard with bigger wheels.

Off-road hoverboard models will have bigger wheels ranging in size from 8.5 inches up to 11 inches or more.

Motor Power

The motors determine how fast the board can go and its ability to climb steep inclines.

The more powerful the motor = the faster the board and the greater degree of incline it can climb.

When you are buying a hoverboard for kids motor power is probably not the most important aspect or specification to pay attention to, but its worth bearing in mind.

Off-road models will typically have more powerful motors than an average hoverboard to allow them to travel over steeper rugged terrain and reach faster speeds.

Regular hoverboards and hoverboards designed for kids will have less powerful motors as they typically have a lower top speed and lower incline climbing ability.

Hoverboard Features

When you are deciding on which hoverboard to buy for your child, you should have a look at what features the board has.

Some models have a number of really cool features which sets them apart from more cheaper models. Some of these features are things that can really enhance your child’s enjoyment of their hoverboard.

We’ve included some of the key features below:

Bluetooth

Bluetooth is included on many hoverboard models and allows users to access a variety of additional features when you the pair the device with a smartphone

Bluetooth Speakers

If a hoverboard has Bluetooth functionality it will also normally have speakers. Users can pair their hoverboard with their smartphones to play their music as they ride, something your kids will enjoy.

Companion App

Some hoverboard brands have companion apps which users can download for free. These apps pair with the hoverboard via Bluetooth and allow for data to be recorded.

Users can normally check rider stats such as how many miles they've covered, battery power levels, top speeds, and track locations they’ve visited.

Some apps allow for firmware to be downloaded so that the board’s software is up to date, and some apps allows users to turn the board on and off remotely.

LED lights

It could be argued that LED lights aren’t a “feature” but are more of an essential aspect of any hoverboard model. However, some boards have better quality LED lights than others.

Some boards have LED lights that change color, and some can even be synchronised with music if the hoverboard has a Bluetooth speaker.

Most hoverboards will have front LED headlights, and some models will also have rear brake lights and turn signal indicators.

Level Adjustment Feature

When you are buying a hoverboard for kids you should consider buying a board with a level adjustment feature.

This feature enables you to increase or decrease the top speed of the board.

If your child is quite young or is an inexperienced balance board rider you can limit the top speed of the board to prevent them from going too fast and potentially injuring themselves.

When they have become more experienced at riding and controlling the board you can simply adjust the mode to increase the max speed.

As well as being able to adjust the top speed, on some hoverboard models you are also able to adjust the steering sensitivity of the board.

Inexperienced riders will benefit from riding a board with lower steering sensitivity until they get used to the board and its responsiveness, after which they can increase it as they like.

Hoverboards that have this level adjustment feature allow you to tailor the board to whoever is using it at the time.

If you have several children this feature also makes it possible for them all to share the same hoverboard (obviously not at the same time!).

You can decrease the top speed and sensitivity for younger kids, and increase it for the older kids.

This feature really does make a hoverboard more versatile and can shortcut the learning process.

Concluding Thoughts

There are many different hoverboards for kids on the market nowadays.

There are also some hoverboard models specifically designed for kids, and there are some which are suitable for both kids and adults.

The hoverboards we have reviewed in our list are a mixture of both.

When you are buying a hoverboard for your kid make sure you pay attention to some of the key features and attributes that we have mentioned in our kids hoverboard buying guide.

Do your kids need a built-in hoverboard speaker? What sort of surface are they planning on riding on? Are your kids complete hoverboard novices who would benefit from a level adjustment feature?

These are the sorts of questions you should be asking yourself when deciding which hoverboard is best for your kids.
